Week 10
It has been a busy week!
Sunday evening at church my kids participated in a impromptu singing.
Savannah also found this leaf with eggs on it some time Sunday. She wanted to keep it in a jar to see what hatched out of the eggs. I told her sure. Later in the week she came to me and told me she had put the leaf in a jar, but forgot to put a lid on it, all the eggs had hatched. So, somewhere in my daughters' bedroom is the inhabitants of these eggs. 👀
Monday we started our day off helping with a 4H program held at a local nursing home. We helped with fresh flower arrangements. Everyone helped make and arrangements to decorate the residents' dining hall, and we also put one in Nana's bedroom.
Monday afternoon we had some friends over. The girls did girl things, they made doterra bath salts and danced to the music of moana. The boys did boy things, they played Bible Battles and did a little sword fighting. Everyone had a good time.
Tuesday was a hard day. We started ok, we continued in our study of Matthew. We had fun with some new weather data. However, when we got to Math we all had a screeching halt. We worked until way after lunch trying to each grasp new content. We then took a lunch break, when we came back to school we focused on Science. We left a little early so the girls could attend a 4H sewing workshop. They had a great time ironing, pinning, cutting, and sewing. They each made a potholder.
After we left 4H we had to run by Meme and Papa's. They got Lillian a new instrument to try. It is an autoharp. Lillian loves it! All she has to do to make a chord is push a button...so her speed! I'll try to get a better picture this next week.
Wednesday we made some decisions about Math. I think things will be better for everyone. I subscribed to Super Teacher Worksheets. So now I can print off review material when needed for any concept. I'm loving it so far. We had beautiful weather Wednesday, so we had PE outside, and even had an extra long recess. We couldn't resist! In afternoon school Logan realized typing isn't quite so easy, he keeps going to hunt and peck instead of keeping his fingers in the correct position. He says if he had a small keyboard he could just use his thumbs and be really fast! We also started our new Health. We decided as a group to study the Human body more in depth than we have in the past. Logan did not have youth this evening, but the girls had kids club, so we dropped them off and me and Logan went to the park. We walked and rolled the walking trails and caught up on visiting. We then ran to Wal-Mart to pick up a few things.
Thursday was wonderful weather again. We also had a good full day of school. Lillian is making progress in reading and in math. I can tell she is making some improvements since being diagnosed with Dyslexia, we know what we are working on now. She started learning about the hydrosphere in science. Lillian and Savannah are also starting their study of Felicity in American History, we are about to start the Revolutionary War. Logan is doing well in all his subjects, he is learning Junior High is a little tougher than Elementary. He is starting to work on essay writing, continuing his study on mammals, and continuing in his ancient history part of From Adam to Us. Thursday in Art we made Bats since Lillian just finished learning about caves in science. They turned out really cute.
Thursday afternoon we just hung around the house. Savannah decided to make another potholder, she did it completely on her own.
Friday morning Logan had an appointment. It was just his yearly renewing of prescriptions for walkers, wheelchairs, and to see if he needs anything else. Everything is kinda on hold right now with Logan. He is waiting on a surgery date. He isn't looking forward to it of course, but he is beginning to realize he needs the surgery. After we finished at the doctor's office we headed off to do our weekly nature study. This week we were to investigate a pond. We talked about the different vegetation and wildlife and talked about at what water levels different plants and animals live. To complete our study we headed to Rick Evans Blackland Prairie Conservation Area. We have been there many times to take classes, but we have never taken time to really study about the Prairie. We read lots of information placards, visited two lakes, sketched what we saw, and fished a little. It was a great day for this outing and we learned a lot!
This is Friday afternoon and I just finished with my tutoring students. I am trying to make this school year about new things, new adventures, and a new sense of calm and peaceful learning. I feel like the last two years we were in sort of a rut. We have had fun trying new things, and enjoying ourselves more in a slower pace of learning. We are going to try and have a restful weekend at home, we have more new adventures planned for next week. Hope you all had a blessed week.
