Week 20

This was our last week of school in 2017.  This week also ended our 1st half of the school year.  This week did not go as planned, but we made it work.

Monday Lillian and I were still sick.  So we took a sick day again.  We did go pick up some friends when they dropped their vehicle off to get worked on and took them back to their house.  We came home and crashed on the couch and had Magic School Bus School. We watched several episodes, but the only one I can remember now is the one on how sounds are made.  I also helped each kid wrap presents they had bought for each other.  Savannah started her egg shell removal science project.

Tuesday we were going to try and go down to school.  Lillian and I still felt bad, it was pouring down rain, and the suburban would not start.  So we didn't go.  We stayed in the house and had Home Ec Morning.  We made homemade apple butter.  It was so good ya'll!  I had never had any, we certainly had never tried to make any, but we will be making it again!  Then after lunch we had art.  We made salt dough ornaments for our old fashioned Christmas tree decorations.  The kids really enjoyed this and I think they all turned our really nice.  Savannah finished with her egg shell removal project, her egg turned out really pretty.  Since we have brown eggs the membrane turned light brown and had a marble appearance.  I cancelled my tutoring student for today and we just rested all evening.

Wednesday we took the morning to have a lesson on budgeting and economics.  I gave the kids a set amount of money and we had to buy Christmas presents for Dad and purchase the ingredients for Christmas day meals.  We went over budget.  One should not try shopping when sick!   It was a good learning experience though! We came home and had lunch.  Then we painted our salt dough ornaments for art. Savannah then did a science experiment called "drinkable iron." I had never seen this science experiment, she used tea to pull iron out of different flavors of juice.  We could see the iron flakes best in the orange juice. After we finished that we went down to school for Math, History, and Science.  Lillian added Venus to her solar system.  Wednesday afternoon we tried our hand at making homemade old fashioned ribbon candy.  We were not able to make the ribbons, and we made three batches for three different flavors and ended up with three different hardnesses of candy, but hey we gave it a try and they are yummy!  Savannah is excited that we learned how to make hard candy so that we can make it throughout the year and she can have some.  She can't have food coloring, and it is quite nearly impossible to find hard candy without food coloring!  Lillian still had fever some throughout the day, and I still was not feeling great so we stayed home from church again.

Thursday morning we went down to school and worked on Math and Language.  We also worked a little on a paper nativity set we are trying to make before Christmas.  We then went to take our friends to pick up their vehicle.  Our friends took us on a neat little field trip on the way.  We drove through a place called Oakhaven.  It was a community built during WWII for military officers and their families to live in while the military worked at the proving grounds.  The proving grounds were used to test bombs.  We got to see some original structures that were used at the proving grounds, there is still even bomb shelters you can see in nearby locations.  We didn't get to see those, but hopefully we will go back one day to see them.  I did not even realize this was so close to here.  They still find bombs on the grounds of the proving grounds from time to time.  Our friends have some grandparents who worked at the proving grounds.  It was really interesting to hear the personal stories from this era.  The houses were beautiful and all looked exactly alike.  They were different colors, and some had added porches on, but still very close to original. I didn't even know this place was here, sometimes I feel like we overlook some very important parts of our history.  When we got home we went back to school and worked on Math and Language.  I also gave out report cards.  This is the first time I have ever given out "grades" in our homeschool.  I always keep up with the kids grades, but I don't really stress it to the kids as long as they are trying their best.  Everyone always asks them how they did on their report card however, so I decided to give them one and see what happens.  They all kinda enjoyed getting one and seeing, in writing, their strengths and weaknesses.   Thursday afternoon Lillian and I were wore out, so we crashed again on the couch.

Today is Friday.  We played catch up a little bit this morning in our Nature Study.  We talked about Christmas plants and the winter solstice. We were also supposed to talk about winter birds, but we have a program coming up soon about that so we skipped it.  It has rained pretty much non stop all day.  So we called it our last day of official school before break as a Marathon Christmas Movie day.  We also decided we may ban Christmas movies that are not cartoons.  The cartoons are cute and funny, the movies are all extremely sad.  Yes they have a good message and they end the best that they can end, but still, they are sad.  We also finished up all our Christmas shopping today. Lillian and I are feeling better today.  Dad came home from work sick though :(  Hopefully we will all be able to get well over the Christmas break.  We will be taking at least next week off, it is our Sabbath Week, and we may take one more week after that off.  I haven't completely decided.  I need to work on school plans, and I also need to do some rearranging and cleaning.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas.
