Week 32-learning outside of the box

This week was a good week. We did not accomplish any book learning.  We did however spend many hours learning.

Sunday after church we had a surprise birthday party for Logan and Lillian.  I could not have pulled this off without the help of my wonderful parents. They were surprised. They had a good birthday.

Monday we tackled some much needed spring cleaning.  Since we no longer have home ec morning, lots of little jobs were piling up. I think I will add it back in.  After lunch Meme and Papa came and picked up Logan to go use his birthday gift certificate to build his bow. He has really enjoyed archery this year, and he wanted/needed a new bow.  He was excited to get to design it how he wanted it. Lillian spent some time building with the Lego kit she got for her birthday. Monday night Logan had music.

Tuesday morning we spent some more time spring cleaning.  We discussed why it's important to do some deep cleaning every once in awhile.  None of my children are cleaners, I kinda fear for their future homes... seriously. After lunch we had an awesome opportunity to go to a local greenhouse/nursery as a Homeschool class and learn how they propigate plants and how greenhouses work.  Each student got to plant some plants on their own.  They planted tomato plants and a pot of flowers. They got to take them home with them.  We had a great time and really enjoyed the spring weather.

Wednesday was Logan and Lillian's birthday.  We decided no school for the day.  They ended up both being birthday winners on our local radio station, so we went and picked up their prizes.  We also needed to run an errand.  While we were in town our surburban died.  It has been having trouble starting for many months, but today it decided it was going to start no more.  Meme came and picked us up and got us to therapy for Logan's appointment.  Dad took off work early to come pick us up from therapy and we got the surburban to the shop and the girls to kids club. A friend came and stayed with us Wednesday evening, and since we didn't have the surburban, we didn't have a vehicle big enough to get us all to church.

Thursday we had science experiment day.  I read aloud for a bit in our various books we are working on. Then we spent the rest of our school time experimenting with light.  We talked about bending light, dividing light, prisms, rainbows, etc.  We also discussed how insects see and experimented looking at the world through insect eyes. Thursday afternoon we picked the surburban up from the shop and then spent the evening with Meme, it was her birthday today.

Friday was another great day of learning.  We went to the library and each child had to pick a biography. They will be working on a book project next week. Then we grabbed a sandwich and headed to STEM class.  It was great!  We focused on Math this time.  The kids built a ladder golf game to take home.  They did lots of measurements and cutting and working together. Then we did dutch oven cooking.  They did measuring again and made their recipes.  Then we learned about cooking with the coals and how to measure temperature with different methods.  Then everyone visited while the food cooked, then we ate it! It was all delicious!

Saturday was Logans first trap meet.  He just got his new shotgun. He did pretty bad, he only hit 1.  But you know, sometimes things just don't go right! We still had a great day.  It was a good learning experience, and next time he will do better. This is our first year with trap shooting, practice will help him improve. And as bad as this mama bear hates it, we need to experience failure from time to time. It's what makes us try harder. It's what enables us to help others later on in life.

So as you can see, no book learning.  But we all had lots of learning experiences this week. It was a rich week.  I still can not hardly believe my precious boy is 13 years old, and my baby is 8 years old.  I never really believed it when my Papa would tell me time flies, but oh how it does!
