Spotlight on Savannah!

Savannah is my very beautiful 10 year old
daughter. She is in the 5th grade this year.
She is extremely intelligent and artistic. She
is a very gifted young lady.  She has struggles
of her own, but she works very hard to
overcome her challenges.  She often perfers
to be on her own, doing her own thing, but
she is very loving to her friends and family.
She is supper excited to have a puppy all of
her own, and she is doing a great job with
Sunny.  She has already taught her how to
sit and she is working on other behavior training now. I think she is going
to be a good dog for Savannah and our family.
Here is a look at the curriculum she is using this year.

Language Arts: Language Arts and Literature Level 5 from The Good and the Beautiful.  This is a really awesome curriculum, and could honestly probably count for more than just Language Arts. She is studying famous artwork, talking about geography, and also there is some history thrown in.

Math: She is using Harcourt Math.  She started the year using Math Lessons for a Living Education from Mater Books, but she did not like it all. There was not enough explanation on how to do the problems for her comfort. So we switched. I told the children we are not going to keep going any longer on curriculum we don't like. There is a bunch to choose from out there!

Handwriting: I've honestly forgotten the name of this curriculum, I bought it through a build your bundle site. It uses famous paintings and sentences about the paintings to work on cursive handwriting. When I printed it out I did not print the title page.  She really likes its simplicity.

Spelling: Spectrum Spelling is what we are continuing with this year. She doesn't love spelling at all, but this has been working for her over the past couple of years.

Science: Chemistry for the Grammar Stage was her curriculum pick. She wanted to experiment more with Chemistry this year. We did a Chemistry Science together as a family a couple of years ago and she wanted to go deeper.  What we like about this curriculum is that everything she can do on her own, we just have to make a supply list for the next week, and then she is ready to go.  She also likes all the neat books she is getting with it on Chemistry.  I do not like the fact that I have had to buy so many other Chemistry books for her to use with this curriculum, they are not optional, she has to have them in order to do the assignments.  I must have missed that somewhere in the fine print when I ordered it for her.

History: Girls of American History is what her and her sister picked to use as their history this year.  We use the books from The American Girl Series to study American History.  We read a book about a girl, then we dig deeper into her time period with projects and lapbooks.  They both have enjoyed this curriculum so far this year.

She also participates in a few subjects we all do together as a family.

Savannah plays the piano.  She has such potential with this instrument. She can play very well.  She has taken formal lessons every year until this year. She wanted to take a break from formal lessons, but she still practices on her own.  I am hoping she will continue.

This year for her Agri Science project she decided to raise a bottle calf.  We were very blessed to get this one. Savannah named her Sweetie. She has been really healthy, she did get some scours, but we were able to clear them up pretty quickly.  Savannah has decided raising a bottle calf was much more work than she anticipated.  She has already decided that next year she will be raising rabbits and chickens instead! She did do really well with Sweetie though, she is weaning her now.

Savannah excels at anything like school projects or art projects.  She always goes above and beyond what is expected of her in these two categories. She never takes the easy way.  Here you can see an actually spinning model of a tornado that she made a few months ago for a homeschool science fair, she got first place on it. She is constantly wanting to work on something in the art category. She is always looking for the next thing to try or make better.

For extracurricular activities Savannah enjoys our church youth group and stays active with it.  She just joined another after school youth program at another church that will start this week.  She is also in two 4H groups. One group is our Nature Seekers Group, and the other group is a cooking 4H group that meets once a quarter.  She wanted to join the sewing group also, but we don't think it is going to make this year.

Savannah loves being outside. One of her favorite places to go is the lake.  She enjoys camping and nature walks, and anything that involves exploring and seeing new places and things.

Savannah is a very active child that keeps me on my toes and never lets me go the easy way.  She is an awesome daughter!
