Week 7-Sabbath Week!

We were all so excited for this week to get here!  We are using a Sabbath Week schedule in our homeschool this year, this is the first year we have tried it.  We have regular school for 6 weeks and then for the 7th week we take a week off for rest and unconventional schooling. We decided for our first Sabbath Week we would take care of a few daunting chores we have been putting off and then spend the rest of the week at the lake camping.

Monday Lillian cooked us pancakes for breakfast and the rest of the day was spent going through clothes, sorting closets and dressers, and putting away or making a donation box of clothes that the children have outgrown.  I helped the girls with their stuff because girl clothing is so much more complicated than boys. Logan really just needed to do some cleaning and sorting and he handled that by himself. It took us most of the day!  Monday evening was music for Logan and the girls hung out with their Meme and worked on their embroidery and looked for rocks to paint.

Tuesday morning I made sunshine toast for breakfast. It was a recipe I found a few years ago when I got tired of fixing our traditional cereal, oat meal, pancakes, or toast.  I honestly didn't think the children would like it, but it became one of their favorite meals, sometimes I think they just like to prove me wrong.  All day  Tuesday we spent cleaning in the yard.  When we first moved in here the entire yard was covered in privet hedge.  We have not been able to get close to the trees with the brush hog to get underneath the trees cleaned up.  We put our goats under one such tree and they cleaned it right up.  We moved the pen under another tree and moved the goats, then we raked and burned what was left behind.  The goats did a great job! Tuesday evening Savannah made oatmeal raisin cookies for us.

The clean tree!                                                             Their new job!

Wednesday we spent the day packing and shopping for groceries for our camping trip. We cleaned out the camper, packed our clothes, made our camping menu and cleaned up the house and finished all the laundry. It was a busy day.  Wednesday afternoon the children had Youth and Kid's Club.  They are really enjoying it and I am glad we decided to give this a try this year.  It does make our Wednesday's crazy, but it is worth it.  We then went to our church for potluck and Wednesday night service.

Thursday was leaving day!  We finished packing up the cold stuff and headed to the lake.  On our last trip out the door of the house, I found Logan's cat on the surburban, I think she knew we were leaving her for a few days!
We got to be pretty picky in choosing our campsite, there were not many people there. So we looked at all the sites closely and finally made a choice.  The rest of Thursday was spent setting up camp and unpacking.

Here is my country children's version of the infinity pool! 😏  Our campsites are always a ways from the swimming beaches, so last year I started packing one of these pools with us for those moments when the kids get to hot after playing or fishing and they need just a quick cool off.  They love it.
For our first campfire meal we cooked pizza over the fire.  It worked ok, not as easy as the campfire recipe book made it sound, but with a few more tries I bet we will have it mastered!
Logan's absolute favorite part of camping is the nightly camp fire. He loves it! He could sit around a fire for hours I think!
Thursday night we got to witness a mayfly swarm. Mayflies were everywhere there was the least little bit of light. The girls and I decided they looked a little bit like tiny dragons!

Friday was fishing day.  We spent the entire day fishing and wading around the lake's edges looking for signs of wildlife.  It was a great day! Lillian caught her very first fish all by herself! She was so excited about catching it, not so excited about holding it! I never could convince her to hold it by its mouth.  She let it swim in the pool for a little bit and watched it, then she set it free. No one else caught a thing! Savannah took to searching the shoreline. She found fresh water muscles, and what she thinks might be a fresh water pearl, it was laying in a paw print next to a large broken muscle shell. There were some tiny fish under the bridge, so the children fed them bread crumbs several times!

When we were all tired of fishing and wading, we went swimming. I have an aversion to lake water, we have had some bad things come from lake water here in Arkansas. It scares me. I really don't know why, I grew up swimming in the lake, this very lake to be exact! So, I'm trying to overcome my fear of letting the kids swim in lake water. Savannah and Logan loved it, Lillian not as much. She couldn't see through the water when she got deep enough to swim, and she is pretty sure fish were trying to bite her legs.  But I think in all they enjoyed it and had a good time.  They all three are very good swimmers. They also worked on learning how to skip rocks.

Friday night we watched the stars. In our Nature Study we were supposed to observe the Harvest Moon this week, but we don't get to see the Harvest Moon until the first week of October this year. So we settled for stars.  I saw three shooting starts!

Saturday was so hot guys!  It got up to 100 degrees! It was also very humid!  So, Saturday morning we gathered some nature stuff and stayed inside. We made leaf people, then I went on Kids Art Hub and found a nature drawing of a hummingbird, so we drew it and then water painted it.  I was able to finally find Savannah an uncommon breed of rabbits for sale, so Saturday around lunch we went to meet the people and buy the rabbits.  They are Creme d' Argent bunnies, they are huge! They are supposed to get even bigger.  She wanted something no one else had at the fair this year, so she can show something unusual next year. The Creme d'Argent Rabbit was once endangered, but has recently made a come back.  They are very pretty.

We spent a few hours at the house unloading the rabbits and making sure their pen was secure then we headed back to the lake. We spent the rest of the evening playing at the playground that is at the campsite and then swimming again.  Lillian enjoyed it better this time, I think because her dad carried her around out into the deeper water!

Saturday night we set around the campfire for awhile then the kids went in to watch a movie and Shane and I set around the campfire talking about future plans.  Sunday morning we loaded up and headed home. It was a really good week.  We are already discussing plans for upcoming Sabbath weeks!
