Logan-9th Grade
I look at my son, my hero, my life changer, and I am just simply amazed. I remember his beginnings, and his struggles, and his accomplishments, his heart for others, and all his wonderful humor. I am so proud of him, so honored that God chose me to be his mother, and simply in denial that he is almost a grown man!!
I think he has made some great decisions about his future. He is planning on attending college, so he wants a rigorous high school plan to better prepare him for that. He has chosen his electives based on possible career choices. He wants to dig a little into them before making them his college majors.
So here it is, his plan for 9th Grade!
English 9- Ancient Literature (1 credit)
He will be using a Great-Grandfather's legacy for his book list. His Great-Grandfather Holcomb was a scholar, and I think the two of them would have gotten along so well. Grandaddy left us a book collection called "Britannica's Great Books of The Western World." He will use some of these books along with Carole Slade's Form & Style textbook to learn how to write research papers and essays. He will also be using Sharon Watson's Engaging High School Writing Prompts to improve his style and voice in his writings.
Science- Biology 101 (1 credit)
Logan likes science, but it's not his favorite thing. I think this simple curriculum will suit him best.
History- Mystery of History Vol 1 (1 credit)
We will all be using this curriculum together. Logan will do the high school assignments to qualify this as a high school credit.
Math- Prentice Hall Algebra 1 (1 credit)
We are going back to a simple textbook. This is not normally a homeschooler's choice, but it honestly just works best for us. We've tried a lot of different homeschool math options, but none have worked for us.
Electives:
Music- Violin and Mandolin (1 credit)
He will continue to self teach himself on these two instruments. He will possibly add a guitar later in the school year. He will also continue to attend 2 hours of music class each week that is outside the home.
Creation Science (1 credit)
We will be doing this class all together. He will participate and complete the high school level activities.
Shop Class 1 Woodworking (1/2 credit)
He will work with his Dad on various woodworking projects and learn to operate basic woodworking tools.
Shop Class 2 Metalworking (1/2 credit)
He will work with his Papa and learn basic blacksmithing and knife making skills.
Kodak basic digital photography (1/2 credit)
He will use this textbook to go back to his first love of photography. He used to take lots of pictures and videos. As our lives filled up with new activities, his photography tapered off. I have a friend who is a professional photographer and I will also work out some times for Logan to shadow her, or at least get some tips from her.
Exploring Psychology in Modules (1/2 credit)
This is a possible career choice, and he simply wants to learn more about it at this time.
This gives him a total of 8 credits for 9th grade. This is a heavy load, but he wants to try it so that in a couple of years he can work a part time job, or do some volunteer work, and take fewer credits each year then. If it proves too much, then he will drop Creation Science.
Extracurricular Activities:
4H Shooting Sports Club
Homeschool Group Trap Team
Homeschool Teen Group
Church and Youth Activities
It's going to be a busy year!
